Weng Hsiao-ling faces scrutiny over identity claims and cinema filming incident

Taiwanese legislator Weng Hsiao-ling has faced intense scrutiny following controversial social media posts regarding her identity and conduct. Her cousin, Weng Jui-bin, sparked significant debate by stating on social media that Weng Hsiao-ling “is already a Chinese person” and that “Taiwanese people look down on her.” Weng Jui-bin also highlighted the academic and military achievements of their family lineage, including Weng's father, a former major general.

Separately, Weng faced backlash after she reportedly cut in line to watch a film and posted unauthorized photos from inside the cinema, praising “the highest noble sentiments of Chinese people.” The film distributor, Light Year Pictures, issued a warning that unauthorized filming violates copyright laws and can carry a prison sentence of up to five years. Democratic Progressive Party legislator Fan Yun criticized Weng’s actions, expressing concern over her civic awareness and cultural literacy.
