Werder Bremen coach confirms Marco Friedl as captain
Werder Bremen coach Daniel Thioune has confirmed that Marco Friedl will remain the team captain. Following discussions during training camp, Thioune described Friedl as his ‘wingman’ and ‘mirror’ within the squad.
Thioune is also implementing structural changes to the team's leadership. He has abolished the traditional player council, opting instead to work with a smaller group. While Friedl's role is set, the identities of the two vice-captains will not be finalized until the end of the month due to ongoing personnel movements within the roster. Thioune also expressed interest in potentially forming a broader ‘leadership group’ in the future.
Additionally, Thioune shared the personal significance of a new tattoo on his wrist featuring the time ‘15:30’. The time represents the traditional kickoff for Bundesliga matches and serves as a reminder of his ambition to continue developing as an established top-flight manager after successfully helping the club avoid relegation last season.
