Werelderfgoedcentrum Waddenzee faces bankruptcy threat

The Werelderfgoedcentrum Waddenzee (WEC) in Lauwersoog is facing potential bankruptcy within two weeks due to debts totaling between 2.6 and 2.8 million euros. The financial crisis stems from higher-than-expected construction costs and lower visitor numbers. Local authorities, including the province of Groningen and the municipality of Het Hogeland, have decided not to provide additional public funding.

In response to the crisis, a massive wave of private donations has emerged. A GoFundMe campaign raised over 300,000 euros in a single day, with total donations exceeding 700,000 euros within two days. The crypto community contributed 40,000 euros, and over 36,000 people signed a petition to save the center. The situation has also drawn international attention, particularly from Japan.

If the center closes, the care of sick and weakened seals will be at risk as other facilities lack sufficient capacity. Ecomare, a nature education center on Texel, has expressed willingness to assist by potentially taking in some of the animals, though they noted that their own capacity is limited and they are monitoring the situation closely.
