Uber, WeRide, and AVOMO secure Spain’s first Level 4 autonomous vehicle permit
Uber, WeRide, and AVOMO (a division of Moove Cars Group) have received Spain’s first national operating permit for Level 4 autonomous passenger vehicles. Granted by the Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) under the ES-AV framework, the authorization allows the partnership to begin deployment preparations in Madrid, including mapping, route validation, and operational testing.
The initial phase will involve the deployment of approximately 20 WeRide GXR autonomous vehicles. These vehicles will operate under the supervision of an on-board safety specialist in high-demand areas of the Madrid region. This milestone represents the first national approval for the WeRide GXR vehicle within the European Union, potentially serving as a regulatory benchmark for future autonomous vehicle certification across the region.
Commercial robotaxi services are expected to launch in Madrid by the end of 2026, following the completion of necessary regulatory and operational milestones. This project is part of a broader strategic partnership between WeRide and Uber, which aims to expand autonomous mobility to 15 cities globally by 2030.
