Werne faces potential budgetary supervision due to high deficits

The city of Werne faces potential budgetary supervision starting in 2027 due to significant financial deficits. The Municipal Audit Institute of North Rhine-Westphalia (GPA-NRW) has warned that a lack of strict rules regarding investments and loans could lead to this formal oversight.

The 2026 budget has already been approved with a deficit of 12.6 million euros, compounded by lower-than-expected trade tax revenues. While the city currently maintains an above-average equity buffer compared to other municipalities, officials warn that if deficits persist through 2028, these reserves will be exhausted.

In response, the administration is examining cost-cutting measures and modernization efforts to maintain long-term operational capacity. Treasurer Marco Schulze-Beckinghausen previously warned of a possible spending freeze due to weak tax income, while Mayor Lars Hübchen views the audit as an opportunity for improvement.
