Werne implements speed displays to encourage driver self-control

The Kommunalbetrieb Werne has implemented a new speed display system on Goetheweg in Werne, Germany, to encourage driver self-control. Installed near a school center in July 2026, the device shows drivers their current speed using green or red indicators to provide immediate feedback.

Unlike traditional speed cameras, this system is not intended to issue fines. Instead, it aims to sensitize drivers to their speed and provide an educational effect. The initiative is designed to calm traffic in sensitive areas such as residential zones, schools, kindergartens, and construction sites, while also reducing traffic noise through more consistent driving speeds.

Tobias Gehrke, chairman of the Kommunalbetrieb Werne, stated that the concept is already showing results, with drivers paying more attention to adhering to speed limits. Some of these displays also collect anonymous traffic data, such as volume and timing, to assist the city with future planning.
