Wero, Apple Pay, and Google Pay expand in European e-commerce

The European payment service Wero is expanding its presence in online retail, positioning itself as a competitor to established services like PayPal. Unlike PayPal, which utilizes accounts with balances or linked cards, Wero facilitates direct transfers between bank accounts using mobile numbers, bypassing the need for IBANs.

Retailer EURONICS has integrated Wero, Apple Pay, and Google Pay into its online shop to coincide with the high-demand 'Black Season.' The company aims to enhance customer convenience by offering modern digital payment options.

While Wero's rollout in online retail has been active in Germany since late 2025, its adoption varies across Europe. In Belgium and Luxembourg, the service is being introduced in physical stores, while in France, the rollout is ongoing. Other major retailers already utilizing Wero include Decathlon, dm, Eventim, and Lidl.
