Wero expands European mobile payment capabilities
Wero, a European mobile payment wallet developed by the European Payments Initiative (EPI), is expanding its capabilities beyond peer-to-peer instant money transfers. Currently active in France, Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands, the service has already reached 25 million active users across France, Belgium, and Germany.
Supported by the European Commission and the European Central Bank, Wero aims to provide a European alternative to major international payment providers such as Visa, Mastercard, PayPal, Apple Pay, and Google Pay. While its initial rollout focused on instant bank-to-bank transfers between individuals, the roadmap includes expanding to online payments and in-store merchant transactions.
In Belgium, the service is gaining significant traction and is expected to soon be accessible to customers of banks representing 99% of the Belgian market. In France, EPI and BNP Paribas are scheduled to unveil ‘Wero for Merchants’ in September to facilitate retail payments.
