Wero payment solution reaches 10 million users in Germany
Wero, the payment solution backed by European banks, has reached 10 million registered users in Germany and 60 million users across Europe. Originally launched in 2024 for peer-to-peer transfers, the service is expanding into e-commerce and point-of-sale (POS) transactions using account-to-account technology.
In Germany, major retailers Lidl and dm have integrated Wero into their online checkouts. The European Payments Initiative (EPI) reports that more than 48,000 merchants across Belgium, France, Germany, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands have already processed Wero transactions.
The service is also moving into physical retail. At the NRF Europe trade fair, Payworld demonstrated Wero integration in Belgium, showcasing how customers can use QR codes on payment terminals to confirm direct bank-to-bank transfers via their banking apps.
