Wero replaces Paylib as Europe’s new mobile payment platform
Paylib was a French mobile payment service that let users pay online, in stores, and transfer money to contacts via their bank’s app, using strong security steps. The service has now been succeeded by Wero, a pan‑European instant‑payment solution backed by the European Payments Initiative (EPI). Wero launched first in Belgium and Germany in summer 2024 and is rolling out to France, Luxembourg and the Netherlands, aiming for more than 50 million registered users by early 2026. Its goal is to provide a European alternative to US‑based services such as PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Visa and Mastercard and to reinforce digital sovereignty. In 2023 Wero acquired Currence iDEAL (Netherlands) and Payconiq International (Luxembourg); its functionality mirrors Paylib’s, with activation through banking apps and secure transaction confirmation.
The transition marks a coordinated effort by European banks to harmonise payment infrastructure and reduce reliance on non‑European providers.
