West Africa seeks broader economic participation pathways

The economic future of West Africa depends on expanding the pathways for economic participation beyond traditional formal employment. While career-based roles in large companies and public institutions remain vital, the formal economy is unable to absorb the massive influx of young workers entering the market.

A July 2024 World Bank report noted that approximately six million young people enter the labor force annually across Western and Central Africa, yet only about half a million new jobs are created during that time.

To address this gap, there is a growing need to support diverse livelihoods, including small traders, independent professionals, farmers, artisans, and technology entrepreneurs. The goal is to transition individuals from vulnerable, informal economic activities toward more productive, skilled, and secure forms of participation.
