West African authorities enforce mandatory helmet laws to improve road safety

Authorities in Niger and Burkina Faso are intensifying efforts to enforce mandatory helmet use for motorcyclists to reduce traffic accidents and improve road discipline.

In Niamey, Niger, the Nigerien Road Safety Agency (ANISER) conducted a large-scale joint operation involving the national police, municipal police, and the gendarmerie. The operation targeted ten strategic roundabouts to monitor vehicle compliance with safety rules, including seatbelt use, traffic regulations, and prohibitions on mobile phone use while driving. ANISER reported an increase in helmet compliance among motorcyclists and a decrease in the number of vehicles being impounded compared to previous operations.

In Péni, Burkina Faso, residents have expressed support for mandatory helmet regulations. Local citizens noted that the measure is a necessary response to the rising frequency of traffic accidents, emphasizing that the requirement serves as vital individual protection and promotes safer travel within the community.
