West African College of Physicians marks 50th anniversary in Abuja
The West African College of Physicians (WACP) is holding its golden jubilee and annual general scientific meeting in Abuja, running from October 24 to October 28. The event brings together over 1,300 medical specialists, researchers, and policymakers to address regional healthcare challenges, including workforce retention and the integration of artificial intelligence in clinical practice.
During the proceedings, the WACP presented an honorary diploma to Nigerian President Bola Tinubu in recognition of his engagement with the medical sector. President Tinubu has specifically urged the college to address the ‘japa’ syndrome—the mass migration of medical professionals from Nigeria and other West African nations to foreign countries.
Since its establishment in 1976, the WACP has expanded to include 13 of the 15 West African countries. As of April 2026, the institution has trained 4,654 Fellows and 4,030 Members across six faculties, including Internal Medicine, Paediatrics, and Psychiatry.
