West African commodity prices see volatility in cocoa and cola markets

Agricultural commodity prices are experiencing significant volatility across West Africa. In Cameroon, cocoa farm-gate prices have fluctuated heavily, recently settling between 2,750 and 2,900 FCFA per kilogram as of late August 2026. This follows a period of extreme swings, including a drop to 700 FCFA/kg last season and previous highs of 6,000 FCFA/kg.

In Guinea, the market in Kankan is facing a sharp increase in the price of cola. A 50-kilogram bag, which previously cost 600,000 GNF, has risen to 2,250,000 GNF. Local retailers report that the cost of purchasing cola from regions like Guéckédou and N’Zérékoré has nearly quadrupled, impacting household incomes and the ability of families to afford the commodity for traditional ceremonies.
