NiMet develops digital data hub to improve Nigerian agricultural climate services

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) is advancing a national digital platform known as the NiMet Data Hub to provide farmers, livestock keepers, and agricultural advisers with reliable, location-specific weather and climate information. Developed in partnership with the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) and Crea2Solutions, the project has progressed from the design phase to an advanced Minimum Viable Product currently undergoing testing.

The initiative aims to address long-standing weaknesses in agricultural climate services, such as fragmented data and the difficulty of converting technical forecasts into practical advice. The hub is expected to support risk analysis, seasonal planning, and climate-informed decision-making by integrating NiMet’s resources, including online map rooms and agricultural climate products.

In a separate development, NiMet has issued weather warnings for thunderstorms and rainfall across various parts of Nigeria. The agency advised residents and motorists to take precautions against potential strong winds and heavy rain expected in several states, including Taraba, Kebbi, and the North-Central region.
