West Bank on verge of collapse, UN officials warn
United Nations officials have warned that the West Bank is on the verge of collapse due to the ongoing Israeli occupation and escalating violence. During a briefing to the UN Security Council, Ramiz Alakbarov, the Deputy Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, stated that the deterioration is the result of decades of unresolved conflict that has undermined the prospects for a viable Palestinian state.
In 2026 alone, 76 Palestinians, including 18 children, have been killed by Israeli forces or settlers. Alakbarov also reported that settler violence has reached unprecedented levels, with the UN documenting over 1,430 incidents involving settlers across 260 Palestinian communities in the last eight months. These actions, alongside demolitions and evictions, have displaced approximately 3,800 Palestinians in 2026, nearly half of whom are children.
Hannan Sulieman, Deputy Executive Director of UNICEF, highlighted the severe impact on minors. She reported that 174 Palestinian children were killed in the West Bank between January and July 2024. Furthermore, at least 355 Palestinian children are currently held in Israeli military detention centers, the highest number in eight years. Sulieman noted that detained children have reported inhumane conditions, including inadequate nutrition and hygiene.
