West Bekaa by-elections resurface to fill vacant Orthodox seat

The political debate regarding a vacant Orthodox parliamentary seat in West Bekaa has resurfaced following support from Speaker of Parliament Nabih Berri for holding by-elections. The seat became vacant following the death of MP Ghassan Skaff, but elections were previously delayed due to security conditions and war.

Former Deputy Speaker Elie Ferzli has emphasized that holding by-elections is a constitutional necessity to ensure proper representation for the Orthodox community, noting that the law mandates 17 Orthodox deputies. Ferzli, who is considered a potential candidate, stated that while he is a ‘natural candidate,’ it is too early to discuss alliances or campaigns before an official date is set.

The move to fill the vacancy comes as the Parliament faces a new reality following a two-year term extension. If a date is established, the election is expected to reactivate the political landscape in the West Bekaa and Rashaya regions.
