West Bengal announces Uttam Kumar centenary celebrations and new film centre

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has announced year-long celebrations to mark the birth centenary of legendary actor Uttam Kumar. As part of the commemorations, iconic films of the actor will be screened in cinema halls across the state, and the Uttam Kumar Institute is set to be inaugurated.

During the celebrations, Adhikari also announced that megastar Mithun Chakraborty has been appointed as the new cultural advisor to the state government. Additionally, the Chief Minister laid the foundation stone for the ‘Uttam Kumar Film Centre’ in New Town, on the outskirts of Kolkata.

The new facility, sanctioned at a cost of Rs 25 crore, will be modeled after the Nandan Cultural Centre. It is planned to include two cinema halls, a 1,000-seat auditorium, an open-air theatre, and specialized laboratories for animation, visual effects, gaming, and film post-production. Construction is expected to begin following the monsoon season.
