The West Bengal Assembly is scheduled to hold a special single-day session to pass the West Bengal Universities & Colleges Administration & Regulation (Amendment) Bill 2026. The legislation aims to implement a ‘one state, one education’ policy across the region.

A primary component of the bill involves establishing guidelines for the transfer of teaching and non-teaching staff between state-run universities. The proposal suggests transferring long-term educators from established universities in Kolkata and other major cities to newer institutions.

Additionally, the bill seeks to move Aliah University from the jurisdiction of the West Bengal Minority Affairs & Madrasah Education Department to the West Bengal Higher Education Department. Once passed, the bill will be sent to Governor R. N. Ravi for assent. Some academics have raised concerns regarding the autonomy of state-run universities and whether these transfers will require mutual consent or be mandated by the government.
