West Bengal BJP government faces communal controversy and soaring debt

BJP MLA Ritesh Tiwari sparked outrage after a public speech in which he swore not to undertake any work for Muslims for the next five years, vowed to withhold certificates, and invoked "Love Jihad" rhetoric, claiming that Trinamour Congress supporters aim to establish "Islamic rule" in West Bengal. The remarks were met with loud applause from his supporters and have heightened communal tensions in the state.

Meanwhile, the Suvendu Adhikari‑led BJP administration is preparing its first budget, which could nearly double West Bengal's expenditure on social welfare schemes. Promised increases to the Lakshmir Bhandar (renamed Annapurna Bhandar) benefit for women, a higher unemployment allowance, and clearing long‑standing dearness‑allowance arrears could raise annual outlays to about Rs 1.29 lakh crore. With a projected revenue deficit of Rs 21,759 crore and a debt burden exceeding Rs 8 lakh crore—far above the ideal 20‑25% of GSDP—the state faces a severe fiscal strain as it aligns its finances with the central government.
