West Bengal Christian communities and colleges face rising pressure

Christian communities and educational institutions in West Bengal are facing increased pressure and hostility following the assumption of power by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the state. Reports indicate a rise in attacks on small Christian communities in rural areas, including the disruption of church services and vandalism, often justified by allegations of forced religious conversion.

In urban areas, the focus of intimidation has expanded to prestigious Christian colleges, such as St. Xavier’s College and Serampore College. These institutions have reportedly faced unannounced visits from government officials and digital propaganda on social media claiming they serve as bases for illegal proselytization.

Financial pressures have also been noted, including the three-year termination of Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA) accounts, which has impacted scholarships and development projects. Leaders of the Bangiya Christiya Pariseba (BCP) have expressed concern over the lack of government intervention and the failure to take action against perpetrators of violence.
