West Bengal CID launches investigation into Abhishek Banerjee's alleged incendiary remarks

The West Bengal Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has taken over the probe into alleged incendiary statements made by Trinamool Congress national secretary and MP Abhishek Banerjee during election campaigning. A senior police officer said that the case files, digital evidence and related documents collected by the Cyber Crime police were formally handed to the CID.

An FIR was filed on May 5 after a complaint by social activist Rajiv Sarkar, accusing Banerjee of making provocative comments about post‑poll violence and vote counting. The CID issued a fresh summons for Banerjee to appear on June 14. Banerjee told media that he would cooperate with the investigation and has previously attended questioning for about five and a half hours. He also criticised what he called political pressure on investigative agencies and hinted that his party may seek legal recourse if needed.
