West Bengal CM to implement UCC and new social laws within six months
West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has announced that the state government intends to implement a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) within the next six months, following the models of Uttarakhand and Gujarat. Speaking at an event in Kolkata marking the birth centenary of Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) former president Ashok Singhal, Adhikari stated that the administration would also introduce stringent laws to combat “love jihad,” “land jihad,” and forced religious conversions.
The Chief Minister emphasized that while the government will function according to the Constitution, it will not tolerate attacks on Indian culture, Sanatani traditions, or places of worship. He also addressed recent protests at Jadavpur University, labeling certain activities as “anti-national” and calling for vigilance against divisive forces.
A high-level committee, led by former Supreme Court judge Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai, has already been established to examine the draft UCC for the state. The proposed legislation aims to standardize civil laws regarding marriage, divorce, inheritance, and adoption across all communities.
