West Bengal: CPIM bookstalls vandalized amid political tension
Tensions have escalated in parts of West Bengal, including Bongaon and Kulpī, following allegations of vandalism and arson targeting Communist Party of India (Marxist) bookstalls. Local CPIM leaders claim that groups of youths, using religious slogans, attacked and destroyed stalls being set up for the upcoming Durga Puja festivities.
In Kulpī, CPIM members filed a police complaint alleging BJP involvement in the destruction of a stall near the bus stand. BJP leaders have denied these allegations, stating that the protests were carried out by local Hindus in response to comments made by CPIM leader Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya.
The controversy also involves legal dimensions, as the Calcutta High Court had previously granted permission for the CPIM to set up bookstalls in Bongaon, with instructions for police to ensure adequate security. While the CPIM maintains they are operating with legal permission, local opposition groups have contested their right to set up stalls during the festival period.
