West Bengal faces heavy rainfall as Bolpur records record-breaking precipitation

Heavy rainfall has hit West Bengal, with Bolpur recording 262.8 mm of rain within a 24-hour period, a level not seen in the region since July 1989. Kolkata also experienced significant precipitation, recording 129.8 mm.

The weather is being driven by a low-pressure system currently located over Madhya Pradesh and an active cyclonic vortex. While the intensity in South Bengal may fluctuate, the Alipore Meteorological Department has issued yellow alerts for several districts, including Purulia, Birbhum, and Paschim Bardhaman, forecasting between 70 mm and 110 mm of rain.

In North Bengal, severe weather warnings remain in place. Orange alerts for extremely heavy rain have been issued for Jalpaiguri and Kalimpong, while yellow alerts cover Darjeeling, Alipurduar, and Cooch Behar. Residents in hilly areas are warned of potential landslides and rising river levels, while low-lying areas face risks of flooding.
