West Bengal Falta Re‑poll Triggers Arrests and FIRs Ahead of Election

Ahead of the 21 May re‑poll in the Falta Assembly constituency of West Bengal, political tension has risen sharply. The seat, part of the Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha area—a stronghold of Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Abhishek Banerjee—has become a symbolic battleground for the BJP, which views gains there as a test of its ability to erode TMC’s dominance.

In the days before voting, the BJP-backed administration lodged an FIR against TMC candidate Jahangir Khan for an alleged 2017 assault that allegedly injured a six‑year‑old girl. Khan denied the accusations, stating, “This is a lie and since the government has changed, BJP is trying to take revenge.” Simultaneously, police arrested Saidul Khan, vice‑president of the Falta Panchayat Samiti and a close associate of Jahangir Khan, on charges including attempted murder and bomb‑related offences. TMC leaders condemn the moves as political intimidation, while the BJP claims the arrests prevent fear‑mongering before the poll.

The crackdown intensified after West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari urged citizens to file complaints against individuals he said had extorted money during the previous TMC administration, sparking public anger and demands for the return of allegedly extorted funds.
