West Bengal government to provide jobs to families of political violence victims

The West Bengal state cabinet, led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, has approved a proposal to provide government jobs to one eligible member of families who lost lives due to political violence over the last 25 years. The legal department has cleared the initiative, which is expected to be formally announced soon.

The scheme aims to cover victims from the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the 2021 Assembly elections, and violence occurring during or after Panchayat elections. To identify eligible families, the state government will issue district-wise official advertisements. Applicants must submit necessary documentation through their respective District Collector offices, followed by a thorough verification process by district administration and police departments.

Political violence has remained a significant challenge to law and order and democratic processes in West Bengal, particularly during local Panchayat elections where control over resources and land is highly contested.
