West Bengal intensifies political and electoral preparations
In West Bengal, political and administrative activities are intensifying ahead of upcoming local elections. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced it will invite applications from professionals to contest the forthcoming Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) polls. According to BJP Lok Sabha member Sukanta Majumdar, the party is seeking candidates from fields such as engineering, medicine, law, journalism, and social work to improve civic amenities. Interested individuals can submit applications via a drop box at the party’s old state headquarters in central Kolkata.
Simultaneously, the West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer has launched a proactive voter enrolment campaign following directives from the Election Commission of India. This drive aims to ensure all eligible electors are included in the rolls through special camps and door-to-door campaigns. The initiative comes amid political pressure from opposition parties, including the CPI-M, Congress, and Trinamool Congress, who are demanding the restoration of approximately 38 lakh voters whose cases remain pending before tribunals.
