West Bengal orders fresh probes into RG Kar rape-murder case

On the second anniversary of the rape and murder of a postgraduate doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, the West Bengal government has initiated several new investigative measures.

Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari ordered a fresh investigation by the state police into the allegedly hurried cremation of the victim's body. This probe targets three individuals—Nirmal Ghosh, Somnath Dey, and Sanjeev Mukherjee—to examine potential irregularities at the Panihati crematorium.

Simultaneously, the state Health Department has launched a departmental inquiry to examine administrative and security lapses at the hospital on the night of the incident. Health Minister Sharadwat Mukherjee stated that the inquiry would investigate whether security deficiencies contributed to the tragedy.

While the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) continues its probe under court supervision, the Calcutta High Court recently directed the agency to restart its investigation from the beginning, including reconstructing the crime scene. To mark the anniversary, all government health institutions in West Bengal observed a two-minute silence in memory of the victim.
