West Bengal police probe Trinamool legislator Paresh Ram Das over rape allegations

West Bengal police have launched an investigation into Paresh Ram Das, a Trinamool Congress lawmaker representing Canning (Paschim), following a rape complaint. The Baruipur police initiated the probe after a woman filed a formal complaint with the sub-division police officer in Canning.

The complainant alleged that the incident occurred in 2023. She claimed that Das extorted 4 lakh rupees from her husband by promising a political ticket for the 2023 panchayat elections. The victim further alleged that after she went to deliver the money to an old age home established by the legislator, she was physically harassed, locked in her house, and raped.

The woman stated that her initial attempts to report the crime in 2023 were ignored by police, and she subsequently faced harassment and bomb attacks on her home from the legislator and his associates. Das has denied the allegations, claiming they are part of a conspiracy to tarnish his reputation and implicate him in a false case.
