West Bengal political debate intensifies over Uniform Civil Code
Political debate has intensified in West Bengal regarding the implementation of a Uniform Civil Code (UCC). Supporters, including members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP), argue that a UCC is essential for ensuring gender justice and protecting the rights of women. They contend that a uniform code would provide equal rights to daughters regardless of religion or caste and prevent issues such as unequal property inheritance for widows.
Chhattisgarh Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sharma has also commented on the matter, suggesting that a UCC could prevent ‘land jihad’ and protect the rights of women within Scheduled Tribe communities.
Conversely, opposition leaders from the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Trinamool Congress (TMC) have criticized the move. CPI(M) leaders have characterized the push for a UCC as an agenda to target specific religious communities, while TMC representatives have raised questions regarding the administration's approach.
