West Bengal political rivalry intensifies ahead of KMC elections

Political tensions are escalating in West Bengal ahead of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) elections. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced an ambitious target to win at least 150 seats, planning to contest the civic polls independently. Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar stated that the party will issue a political ‘chargesheet’ against 130 Trinamool Congress (TMC) councillors, alleging financial irregularities. The BJP is also implementing a candidate selection process prioritizing individuals with clean public images.

In response, TMC Chairperson and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has adopted a defiant stance against the BJP. During a party event in Kolkata, Banerjee criticized the necessity of seeking judicial intervention for rally permissions, stating the party would instead seek ‘people’s approval’ for public meetings. She also announced upcoming district tours across the state to strengthen political outreach.

The electoral landscape is further complicated by proposed ward delimitation in the KMC. While the number of wards is expected to exceed 200, certain TMC factions have raised concerns regarding the infrastructure required to support such an increase and the ongoing revision of electoral rolls.
