West Bengal political shift impacts Durga Puja awards in Kolkata
The political landscape in West Bengal has significantly influenced the 2026 Devi Durga Samman awards in Kolkata. Following a change in state power, several prominent Durga Puja committees traditionally associated with Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders—including Suruchi Sangha, Chetla Agrani, Ekdalia Evergreen, Sreebhumi Sporting Club, Hindustan Club, and Tridhara Sammilani—were excluded from the official government award list.
In contrast, new committees have gained recognition. Santosh Mitra Square in Central Kolkata received the ‘Serar Sera’ (best of the best) award, with BJP legislator Sajal Ghosh associated with the venue. Other honorees include Allen Park for eco-friendly celebrations, Behala Arunodaya Samiti for best idol, and Shyam Bazar’s Shyam Square Public Puja for a special award. A total of 23 committees were recognized across seven categories.
The shift is also visible in the physical presence of political leaders at various pandals. While TMC leaders like Mamata Banerjee have had a reduced presence at major inaugurations, BJP leaders, including Suvendu Adhikari, Dilip Ghosh, and Sukanta Majumdar, have been highly active in visiting various puja venues across the state. This transition reflects a broader change in the social and political dynamics of religious and cultural celebrations in the region.
