West Bengal post‑poll violence brought before Calcutta High Court

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has filed a public‑interest litigation in the Calcutta High Court alleging widespread post‑poll violence after the West Bengal Assembly election results were announced on May 4. The petition, filed by Sirsanya Banerjee on behalf of MP Kalyan Banerjee, claims more than 2,000 TMC workers and supporters have been injured and around 365 party offices vandalised across the state, citing incidents such as the alleged demolition of a TMC office at Kolkata’s Hogg Market and the vandalism of Lenin statues in Murshidabad and West Midnapore.

The division bench of Chief Justice Sujoy Paul and Justice Partha Sarathi Sen scheduled a hearing for the case, with the court expected to consider an urgent intervention to halt the violence and order an investigation. TMC chief Mamata Banerjee also appeared before the court, asserting that many party members were forced to flee their homes and were targeted because of their affiliation with the Trinamool Congress.
