West Bengal rolls out mobile biometric attendance for govt staff
The West Bengal state government announced a new attendance system for its civil servants that uses geo‑fencing and mobile phones. Employees can record their presence from within the office boundary through a smartphone app, eliminating the need for separate biometric hardware.
The rollout follows a mandatory face‑recognition system introduced at the State Secretariat Nabanna on June 15 and is scheduled to be phased in across all government offices by July 31. Officials say the technology will cut maintenance costs, improve accuracy and ensure timely attendance reporting.
