West Bengal TMC leader Sabyasachi Dutta arrested on extortion charges
Trinamool Congress leader and former Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation chairman Sabyasachi Dutta was arrested on June 9, 2026 in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district on charges of extortion and criminal intimidation. Police say a businessman alleged Dutta demanded more than ₹1 crore in 2018, leading to an FIR and his detention at Bidhannagar police station. Dutta told reporters, "If they can prove that I took even one rupee, I am ready to be hanged," before being taken for a medical check‑up. When he was escorted to court, eggs and tomatoes were thrown at him.
Opposition BJP activists staged a protest in Kolkata following the arrest, demonstrating outside the police station where Dutta was taken into custody.
