West Bengal TMC MLA Madan Mitra raided in municipality recruitment scam

India's Enforcement Directorate (ED) carried out coordinated raids at seven locations in Kolkata, including the two residences of Trinamool Congress legislator Madan Mitra, as part of an investigation into a multi‑crore cash‑for‑municipality jobs case in West Bengal. The probe alleges that Mitra benefitted from illegal gratifications, including cash and gold, to secure the appointment of ineligible candidates in several municipalities, with investigators linking him to more than 125 such recruitments.

The raids aim to collect documentary, financial and digital evidence to trace the alleged money trail and identify other participants. The case also ties to the earlier arrest of former TMC legislator and ex‑Fire Services Minister Sujit Bose, who faces charges related to irregular appointments in South Dum Dum Municipality and other money‑laundering allegations. The Calcutta High Court recently rejected Bose's plea to quash the ED's investigation. The investigation has drawn significant political attention in West Bengal, with opposition parties demanding swift action against the accused.
