West Flanders to showcase heritage preservation during Open Monument Day
The Province of West Flanders will participate in Open Monument Day on Sunday, September 13, 2026. Under the theme ‘In goede handen’ (In good hands), the event aims to showcase how historical heritage is researched, maintained, restored, and preserved.
In Kortrijk, visitors at the Augustinian Monastery can observe monument wardens using specialized rope and rappel techniques to inspect the monastery roof. The program includes ‘Moving masterclasses’ where small groups explore hidden spaces to learn about interior preservation, with specific sessions tailored for youth.
Other featured locations include the Provincial Court in Bruges and the Atlantic Wall Raversyde in Ostend, which will also host special activities to demonstrate the craftsmanship and knowledge required to safeguard regional heritage for the future.
