West Florida upsets Southern Illinois in first DI FCS win
West Florida secured its first Division I FCS victory by upsetting No. 16 ranked Southern Illinois with a 34-31 win on Thursday night. Ty’ray Davis led the Argonauts, throwing for two touchdowns and rushing for another.
West Florida built an early 27-9 lead. Southern Illinois attempted a comeback in the second half, scoring touchdowns through Jake Curry and Kyle Thomas, and reducing the deficit to 27-24 in the fourth quarter. The Argonauts defense secured the win after forcing a fumble and a late interception by David Law-Mortimer with 58 seconds remaining in the game.
The Argonauts, who began their football program only a decade ago, previously won the Division II national championship in 2019.
