West Ham United secures first WSL victory over London City Lionesses

West Ham United secured their first victory of the Women’s Super League (WSL) season with a 2-1 win against the London City Lionesses at Victoria Road.

Kelly Gago and Viviane Asseyi scored for the hosts within the first 45 minutes of the match. London City Lionesses responded with a goal from Daniëlle van de Donk, who scored via a back-heel from the edge of the box following a corner from Kadidiatou Diani.

The result marks the first defeat for the London City Lionesses this campaign, following their opening-day win against Manchester United. Despite significant summer recruitment including players such as Alexia Putellas and Mary Earps, the Lionesses were unable to overcome West Ham’s defensive organization.
