West Lesvos to participate in Ionian Days of Memory and Culture 2026
The Municipality of West Lesvos will participate in the ‘Ionian Days of Memory and Culture 2026’, hosted by its sister municipality, Nea Ionia, from September 6 to September 13. A special tribute dedicated to West Lesvos is scheduled for the opening day, Sunday, September 6, at the Nea Ionia Municipal Conference Center. The event will feature speeches, presentations, and musical performances highlighting the region's history, cultural heritage, and modern identity.
A central theme of the gathering is the shared historical connection to Asia Minor memory. The two municipalities are linked by the traditions, narratives, and flavors brought to their new homes by people following the displacement from Asia Minor.
The Lesvos Fossilized Forest Natural History Museum will contribute to the event by presenting a section of an 18-million-year-old fossilized ancestral pine trunk. This exhibit serves as a testament to the Fossilized Forest, which contributed to Lesvos being recognized as a UNESCO Global Geopark. Additionally, West Lesvos will host a promotional pavilion featuring tourism materials, historical exhibits, and local culinary products and sweets.
