West Midlands wildfires destroy homes and injure multiple people
A series of intense wildfires has caused extensive devastation across the West Midlands and other parts of the UK during the country's hottest day of the year, with temperatures reaching 38.1C. In Stourbridge, a massive blaze near a golf course scorched approximately 40 acres of land and destroyed at least six homes. The West Midlands Fire Service described the situation as one of the most significant incidents they have ever encountered, reporting thousands of emergency calls.
The fires resulted in multiple injuries, including a child and three firefighters who were hospitalized. At least ten people were injured in total across the region. In addition to the residential destruction, the fires caused significant disruption, including the closure of the northbound M6 motorway due to smoke.
Other regions also reported wildfire activity, including South Wales, Norfolk, and the New Forest. In South Wales, a woman was arrested on suspicion of arson following a major fire in Newbridge. In Norfolk, a major incident was declared as smoke from a blaze on Mousehold Heath blanketed Norwich. Authorities have urged the public to use emergency services wisely and to avoid affected areas to allow crews to operate safely.
