West Midlands flooding causes significant damage in Birmingham

Heavy rainfall and intense storms have caused significant flooding across the West Midlands, particularly impacting Birmingham and surrounding areas. The Environment Agency issued multiple flood warnings, including for Bromsgrove in Worcestershire, where rising river levels in the Spadesbourne Brook area threatened properties and the Midland Waterlife Centre.

In Birmingham, residents in areas such as Great Barr, Perry Barr, and the Beeches Estate reported severe damage. Some homes were submerged under up to ten inches of water, with residents describing roads as resembling rivers. Emergency crews and fire services were deployed to respond to flooding in Perry Barr, while local residents worked to clear mud and debris from blocked drains.

While a flood warning for Birmingham was removed on Thursday morning, the Environment Agency cautioned that standing water and debris may persist. Flood alerts also remain in effect for parts of the Black Country, Warwickshire, Shropshire, and south Staffordshire, including Chasetown. A yellow thunderstorm warning was scheduled to remain in place across England until 10 pm.
