West Midlands gun crime falls due to new policing and community efforts
Gun crime in the West Midlands has seen a significant decline compared to the early 2000s, when the region was frequently described as the gun crime capital of England and Wales. Data from West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner Simon Foster indicates that recorded gun offences fell to 294 by 2026, a substantial drop from approximately 1,300 offences recorded in 2002-03.
Police leadership attributes this downward trend to internal restructuring and specialized enforcement. The establishment of a major crime unit dedicated to all firearms events has allowed for more concentrated efforts on high-level illegal activity. Recent metrics show that annual firearms discharges fell from 157 incidents in 2020-21 to 69 last year, with only 30 discharges recorded in the first seven months of 2026. Officers also seized 110 guns this year.
Beyond policing tactics, community shifts and mentorship programs are cited as contributing factors. Former gang members, such as Simeon Moore, note a change in street culture and an increase in individuals speaking out against violent lifestyles to protect younger generations.
