West Midlands Metro opens new control centre ahead of Dudley extension
West Midlands Metro has opened a new high-tech Operational Control Centre at its Wednesbury depot. The facility is designed to serve as the operational hub for the region’s expanding tram network, improving safety, reliability, and efficiency.
The centre features a large-scale digital data wall providing three times the coverage of the previous system, alongside advanced heat mapping and video analytics technology. These tools allow operators to monitor real-time crowd build-ups and detect suspicious behavior. The facility also integrates upgraded CCTV systems from tram stops and onboard vehicles.
This development precedes the launch of the Metro extension connecting Wednesbury and Dudley town centre, with passenger services expected to begin later this year following safety testing and driver training. Mayor of the West Midlands Richard Parker stated that the modernised depot prepares the network for future expansions to Digbeth, Merry Hill, and the Birmingham Sports Quarter.
