West Midlands Police arrest teenager over posts mocking councillor's attire
A 15-year-old Reform UK activist, identified as Fraser, was arrested by West Midlands Police following complaints from Simon Bennett, the leader of the Conservative group on Wolverhampton City Council. The arrest occurred at the teenager's home near Walsall after Bennett reported Facebook posts in which the youth criticized his attire.
According to reports, the posts included comments on Bennett attending a council meeting in casual clothing, such as shorts and a T-shirt, and a subsequent post using the term ‘rent boy’ after the councillor appeared in a suit. During the arrest, four officers searched the teenager, took him into custody, fingerprinted him, conducted a DNA search, and seized electronic devices.
Legal experts and commentators have cited the incident as an example of the expanding criminalization of speech in the United Kingdom. Lawyers for the teenager are reportedly preparing a wrongful-arrest claim.
