West Nile virus cases rise among horses in France

France is experiencing a significant rise in West Nile virus cases among horses. As of August 21, 2026, 93 equine cases have been confirmed across the country, with 53 cases in Occitanie and 33 in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region.

The virus, which is transmitted by mosquitoes, was detected as early as June in Île-de-France. According to the RESPE, the current number of cases already exceeds those of the previous two years, and the epidemic peak may not have been reached yet.

While approximately 80% of infected horses show no clinical signs, the virus can cause severe neurological issues in 1% to 10% of cases. Symptoms include loss of appetite, depression, ataxia, blindness, muscle weakness, paralysis, and convulsions. Experts advise eliminating standing water and using repellents to mitigate mosquito populations.
