West Nile virus detected in horses in Wyoming and Utah

The Equine Disease Communication Center (EDCC) has reported three new cases of West Nile virus (WNV) in horses located in Wyoming and Utah.

In Fremont County, Wyoming, one horse tested positive. In Utah, two unvaccinated Quarter Horses were affected: a 3-year-old gelding in Cache County was euthanized on August 10, and a yearling filly in Duchesne County was euthanized on August 20.

West Nile virus is transmitted to horses through mosquito bites. While some horses may show mild symptoms, others experience neurological issues such as muscle twitching, hypersensitivity, and spinal weakness. There is no cure for the virus, and mortality rates for infected horses can reach between 30% and 40%. Vaccination is recommended as an effective prevention tool, with veterinarians often suggesting annual boosters or a two-shot series for unvaccinated animals.
