West Nile virus detected in mosquitoes near Lindsay

Lakelands Public Health has reported that mosquito surveillance in the Lindsay area has identified mosquitoes testing positive for West Nile virus (WNV). While no human cases of the virus have been recorded in the Lakelands region this year, health officials are advising residents to take precautions as mosquito activity remains high through late summer.

To reduce risk, officials recommend wearing long sleeves, long pants, and light-colored clothing, particularly between dusk and dawn. Using insect repellents containing DEET or icaridin is also advised. Additionally, residents are encouraged to eliminate potential breeding sites by removing standing water from containers such as flowerpots, buckets, and bird baths.
