West Nile virus warning issued for Trakya region

Dr. Habibe Tülin Elmaslar Mert, an instructor at Trakya University Faculty of Medicine, has issued a warning regarding the West Nile virus, which is transmitted via Culex mosquitoes. The virus is spread through wild and migratory birds; mosquitoes that bite these birds can subsequently transmit the infection to humans and horses.

While most infected individuals show no symptoms, approximately 20 percent may experience flu-like symptoms, including headache, fatigue, chills, and shivering. High-risk groups include the elderly, individuals with chronic illnesses, and those with suppressed immune systems.

To prevent infection, experts recommend avoiding outdoor activities during the evening when mosquitoes are most active, wearing long-sleeved clothing, and using protective lotions. Additionally, eliminating standing water in gardens and surrounding areas is advised to prevent mosquito breeding. Agricultural workers are encouraged to perform tasks during daylight hours to minimize exposure.
